Rookie projector mistake?

Hi, I have just set up a projector system for my local youth club and having never done something like this before, it was a BIG learning experience!
The youth club uses it for movies and games from a Microsoft 360 games console, which i also set up. The system seems to work fine apart from a halo effect on the image apparent in both game play and movies. It is most noticeable on the high contrast lines of a dark object on a light background and the halo effect always to the right hand side of the image.
The projector is a Dell 1800mp and i use a standard vga cable to connect the projector and console. I have a friend with the exact same system in his home and he says he suffers from it also! I have changed the resolution settings on the console to match the xbox but not no avail....however the lower the res, the less apparent the halo becomes. Is this an optical problem or am i missing something obvious?
