Inability to Hold Breath Ccl471 04/15/07
I am quite obese. When I wake up in the morning, the first thing I do is drink a glass of water.

As I am drinking, I need to hold my breath long enough to swallow a couple of times, then take a breath before swallowing again. Holding my breath that brief moment to swallow is enough to cause me discomfort.

I noticed that I only have this problem when I first get up in the morning. I have no discomfort when I drink fluids later in the day, although I know that when I do drink later in the day holding my breath that brief moment to swallow is as long as I can handle doing so without discomfort.

So why is it that when I wake up in the morning I cannot hold my breath as long as I can later in the day?

    Many thanks,

    C.L.
