Democratization of China |

In July of 2001 I posted a question on AskMe about China becoming a democracy.
The expert answering my question said that China is walking towards democracy, but that the process needs to be slow, otherwise it would be a disaster(economically, I guess) like what happened to the former Soviet Union in its first few years as a democracy.
But China has been liberalizing its economy, transitioning it into a capitalist economy since about 1980, right?
And their economy has seen rapid growth over the last 25 years, and its GDP has surpassed Japan's, becoming the world's second largest economy, very likely exceeding the GDP of the U.S. by the beginning of the next decade.
So if China were to switch to a democratic system of government today, would it be a disaster ala the USSR? Or is China ready economically to become a democracy? If not, then when will it be ready?
If China will become a democracy in the future, when do you think it will happen?
Many thanks,
C.L.
