economics of Katrina? rivers 09/16/05
I'm wondering about the impact of Katrina. A group of my friends and me were talking about the idea that people who owned their homes were probably the ones that want to go back to NO. I don't think they should rebuild, but who asked me? ! I wonder how many people we are talking about. I heard that about 33 percent of the people evacuated owned their own homes. 66 percent were renters, and 43 percent want to move back. I'm guessing that of the 43 percent that want to go back, most of them are out of the 33 percent that are property owners. Does that mean that approx. 10 percent of the renters want to move back? Whatever it means I heard that most of them do not want to go back. It seems like NO will benefit greatly from the storm. NO will be built brand new and will have about 90 percent less of the former renters than were there before the storm.

Can the communities that opened shelters for the people of NO absorb the majority as permanent residents without economic collapse?
