The word "blog" is short for "web log".

The idea of a web log is for someone to keep a sort of online diary that lists things that they found interesting on the Web. The earliest web logs were like this: just links to web sites with a few comments.

Now, the commentary has become at least as important as the links.

One of the most poplular for beginners is "Blogger", whose web sites can tell you a lot more about what blogging is and will even let you start your own blog for free.
