During the last half-century, the Solid Democratic South has disappeared and a more competitive, perhaps Republican leaning, partisan politics has developed within the region. What role did “race” play in this change? Defend your answer with supporting evidence and with a discussion of why alternative explanations are (more/less) persuasive.

Because of the nature of man (human nature) race or ethnic blocks always can be used to sway people. However in this case, it has more to do with the economy. Because of the northern Democrats' tendency to want to "take care" of people with forms of socialism, new business suffers. And the south needing new businesses, opted for business instead of welfare. There is no more proof except that many businesses moved to the south and many southerners moved to the Republican Party. Others might blame it on racial factors believing that since Democrats say they are the party of the equality for all, southern whites turned against the Democratic Party. But the fact is: "It's the economy...."
