HI Jeff,
Where do you live, as in Maine, Memphis, Santa Fe, Minneapolis...etc?
If you live in a climate like Chicagoland, you may want to plant an easy garden that will flower all year long by having 4 or so annuals and peri's that flower at different times(full sun?).
Mums bloom in late fall, snapdragons in the summer, bulbs in the spring(it's too late for them now)coral bells are cute in a garden. Fill in with pansies and petunias, they are available everywhere. Phlox is a great perenial to plant toward the back, may not bloom the first year.
Plant a border of short flowering plants like alyssum, there are different colors, and they bloom all year.
This is just a simple garden, some plants will come back the next year, some you will have to replant or add more variety.
