Hi, my neighbor just cut down the only trees that offered shade to my back yard. To my delight, I've discovered 2 trees growing from seed. I'm not positive as to the type of trees they were/are, pine of some sort, though non cone producing. The seedlings are about 2 inches tall now, how can I protect them and help them survive the upcoming Nevada winter? They're growing in a bed of soil and rock in a pathway inside my back yard.

Hi, Now would be a perfect time to move them. You need to take a spade and dig around them so as to get a good root ball at least two inches in diameter. Make sure the soil is damp or better yet wet when you get the root ball. You want to keep the roots and soil intact as much as possible. But before you take them up, have your new holes ready and take them straight to them. Water them well after planting. Since they are so small I would plant them in a protected area where there is no danger of being mashed or walked on. Once they get about a foot tall, do the same thing again to move them to their permanent home. Always get a good sized root ball when you move any plant being carefull not to desturb the little fine roots. These are what feels the plant. Hope this has helped and thanks for rating my answer.
