  • Apple & Macintosh

I have worked with computers since the mainframe days starting in 1967 (Univac 1108, IBM 360, DEC PDP-10) as well as the Apple II beginning in 1977. My first Mac was a Mac Plus in late 1984, and between my wife and I we have about 10 desktop Macs and about half a dozen Mac laptops. My wife has a G4 desktop running System X while I perk along with a blue-and-white G3 on System 8.6 (she always the newest stuff!). I am also familiar with a number of programming languages and with the Mac-specific calls (toolbox, Carbon, etc.), although I don hold myself out as a real expert in programming (except maybe in Pascal).

  • Books & Literature

So many categories here at Answerway.

Books and literature have been a part of my life for decades -- almost as early as I can remember (I taught myself to read before kindergarten, then turned around and taught my younger brother.) Funny how with all of the electronic media and entertainment alternatives, books have stood the test of time. Humans are unique among living creatures in their ability to project experience forward in time through writing, and even to project experiences that never actually happened. May we never lose that gift.

  • Business Law

I have practiced law in California since 1980, initially at two of the largest law firms in the country and then at my own small firm in Los Angeles. I have handled business litigation involving everything from record royalties to defense contracts, trade secrets to real estate disputes, and an extensive amount of employment law (on the employers side). I am a top-10% graduate of Stanford Law School, and have lectured and published extensively on a variety of business and employment law topics.

  • Career Planning

I am on at least my third career at this point, and can speak from personal experience of everything from job burnout to mid-life crisis to the importance of taking charge of one' s own destiny. And I will say in advance that just about everything in career counseling can be reduced to these three questions:
      a. What do you want to do?
      b. What obstacles are preventing you from doing it?
      c. What can you do to remove those obstacles?

  • Dogs

My wife and I have four dogs (two cocker spaniels and two beagles), all of whom are show dogs. The two cocker spaniels are retired AKC champions; our younger beagle (born July 2001) just finished her championship and will be showing as a Specials dog now. Our two earlier dogs, a cocker spaniel and a Doberman, lived to the ripe old ages of 15 and 12 respectively. Our dogs are part of the family, and we work at taking good care of them.

I have hands-on familiarity with secure online transactions in connection with several of the web sites I have developed, and have been working closely with e-commerce for several years. I have been involved with developing secure-server-enabled web sites for online purchasing for about five years, and have learned a lot about what works and what does not. I am closely tuned in to this world, read a large number of newsletters giving the latest techniques and discoveries, and stay in touch with a number of other people handling online businesses to share information. While in active practice I handled a steady stream of employment law cases (always representing the employer, or defense, side) in California. I am familiar with typical wrongful termination and employment discrimination cases. Nine times out of ten, if someone asks whether they should commence litigation in response to an employment problem, I will say "no," but ask your questions in case you are that tenth person.

  • Test Preparation

I have lost count of the number of tests I have taken -- PSAT, SAT, SAT II, GRE, LSAT, GMAT, MBE, and more -- generally scoring in the top few percentiles. I can help with preparation and test-taking strategies for these, and for classroom tests in high school, college, and law school.

  • Trademark Law

I have registered a number of trademarks in the U.S., and am generally familiar with trademark law.

Note that there is an enormous amount of information available at the U.S. government trademark site:

  • Web Browsers

I have been working with web browsers and web sites since the early days (in web history) of 1995. I created my first two web sites by writing them entirely by hand in a text editor, and viewing them on Netscape Navigator 1.2. (Now that is old!) Check out my FAQ page under HTML for tutorials.

  • Web Page Design

In connection with my other activities, I have put together more than a dozen web sites, including sites for a major professional organization, a massive site for an improv compny in Los Angeles, and several sites that I use in my own businesses. I am very familiar with HTML and am conversant with perl, PHP, javascript, and C. I also have strong opinions on what works and what does not work in today's web environment.

  • Writing

I have a B.S. in Technical Writing & Editing, then went on to earn a law degree from Stanford. In my professional life I have produced literally tens of thousands of pages of written material, ranging from (of course) legal matter to magazine articles, columns, and non-fiction books. I am also quite knowledgeable in the specific fields of advertising copy and public relations copy. So ... ask your question!
